Robert Dash’s Micro Climate Change is a surreal articulation of nature’s response to forceful stimulus from human activity. In this series, natural objects inhabit landscapes of miniature details from their own bodies, challenging our sense of scale and our perception of embodiment.

Rachel Jump’s Origins is a present-day articulation of poignant moments from her family’s past, empathetically reexamining memories that shaped her sense of identity. Jump embraces the fragility and unreliability of memory, harnessing it to reenact what has passed, not with a literal fidelity, but with a focus on emotional resonance with the past. 

Marti Corn’s Road to Nowhere is a meditation on the struggle to make a home where no hope of one exists. Her sensitive, yet stark, montage of the daily movements of hundred of thousands of people from a multitude of cultures, on their way to and from the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, imparts the endless purgatory that these families are enduring.

Yukari Chikura’s Fluorite Fantasia (Looking For My Father) is a pilgrimage through universes that range from the miniature and personal to the vast and cosmic, in search of her father who fell silent before she had a chance to preserve his memories.

These images transcend reality and convention, drawing the mind’s eye to look again, to reconsider the ordinary by giving exposure to layers of implication that lie beyond the surface of their compositions. Each photographer achieves this with their particular technique and artistry, creating images that range from the playful to the disturbing, each one, thought-provoking.

These images open our eyes to the spirit of the locations and people they depict. We are left curious about the life that lies beyond the frames we see. They go beyond the visual and titillate our other senses as well, challenging us with emotional insights and the movement of time as it passes by the subjects of these photographs.

The photographs in this exhibition are windows into the intriguing relationships that sustain their subjects. These images are rife with narrative, capturing the interactions of family members in the context of their physical and cultural environment. Many of the photographs shimmer with the warmth that arises from the comfort the subjects give each other, with no need for words. In others, we are moved by a palpable sense of duty, or by fleeting moments of intimacy that take on so much weight when frozen in time for eternal consideration, even as the relationships they capture will evolve as time passes. 

The forms here range from the constructed to the organic. We are moved by the emotional depth of some of the images—visual geometry that, in its grandeur or design, isolates and emphasizes a private human moment. Other images capture the tender fascination with which we regard nature, at once orderly and random. Reflections and shadows create new geometries wherever light moves, it creates fleeting moments of beauty, humor and often, awe.

These images respond with empathy to our relationship with our personal health and that of others in our lives. The subjects in these photographs are in varying stages of struggle and victory as they assert or reassert their humanity over the course of nature.

These images respond with intensity to the emotion resonating in the functional spaces we construct. The structures in these photographs span the spectrum of spaces built for nourishing our bodies to spaces that nourish our souls.
