We are proud to announce the winners and selections by our Juror Sarah Sudhoff for the Passporte Prize for Surreal Photography Honoring Man Ray 2017:
- Juror's Award: Julia Wilson
- Director's Award: Lynette Miller
- Honorable Mentions: Sandra Bacchi, Jake Lee, Wen Hang Lin, Marcie Rich, Jerry Wein
Congratulations to the photographers selected for the Passporte Prize for Surreal Photography exhibition. These images transcend reality and convention, drawing the mind’s eye to look again, to reconsider the ordinary by giving exposure to layers of implication that lie beyond the surface of their compositions. Each photographer achieves this with their particular technique and artistry, creating images that range from the playful to the disturbing, each one, thought-provoking. - Editors
Juror's Statement
As a juror, I always start by looking for the most interesting content that is supported by strong composition and sound technical skill. Second, I select images that uniquely investigate the theme – everything from digital constructs to existing realities. I've long admired the work of Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall, Sam Taylor-Wood, Adam Fuss, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Tokihiro Sato, and Georges Rousse among other artists who construct engaging narratives through lighting, perspective and props.
The works chosen for the 2017 Passporte Prize for Surreal Photography successfully employed a range of techniques, however it was the quirkiness, vulnerability, and disorientation of the top images that resonated most with me. - Sarah Sudhoff
ABOUT THE PASSPORTE PRIZES
The Passporte Prize Call for Entry is an opportunity for photographers to showcase their work around particular themes. Juried by renowned curators, photo editors, gallerists and photographers, the Passporte Prize helps photographers gain crucial experience with juried shows and develop their exhibition resumes.
THEME
Passporte Prize for Surreal Photography Honoring Man Ray
Surreal images range from the impossible to an overlap of, and possibly a collision between, the real and the imaginary. They sustain a tension that challenges the viewer to think beyond reason and obvious calculation. The viewer is invited to decipher metaphor and delve into dreamscapes, to draw meaning or simply to ponder a fantastic, irrational moment.
For this group exhibition, we seek photographs that draw the viewer into an experience beyond the explicable and the ordinary. We are open to your personal vision of this theme.
